How does big business use services like twitter successfully? How do they measure success and what mistakes have been made along the way?

I currently have a small business, would it be regarded as bad etiquette if i start a facebook profile for it? Or is it ok to do so like myspace where corporate profiles are set up?

I just signed up for Twitter and I'm just wondering how it can be used as a social marketing tool for my business. It seems to be kinda like facebook.

A couple of businesses have asked me to help them get set up with Facebook, Linked In, Twitter, and so on. I don't have any idea what would be a fair price and what services and prices to offer / charge to update them. I would appreciate some practical suggestions. Thanks!
